Old Swedes Cemetery, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, United States

Notes: Old Swedes Cemetery is located on the property of Holy Trinity "Old Swedes" Church at Wilmington, Delaware on the southeast corner of 7th and Church Streets. The old burial ground was at this site and therefore the church was selected to be built here and was constructed in 1698 to 1699 as a Swedish Lutheran Church. In 1791 the church was placed under the jurisdiction of the Protestant Episcopal Church, which it remains today. The cemetery contains some 15,000 burials. Burials were haphazardly scattered throughout the cemetery until 1857, when official square parcels were designated. The oldest legible marker is that of William Vandever, who died in 1718. The church was occupied by British Soldiers during the Battle of the Brandywine in 1777. Visit www.oldswedes.org for additional information.
