  MILITARY SERVICE: Veteran of World War II in the 2d Engineer Special Brigade, Company B of the 262d Medical Battalion. Also a veteran of the Korean Conflict, during which time he served at Fort Sill (Lawton, Oklahoma). Ed completed "120 hours of H-23 Field Maintenance Instruction" at Camp Mabry, Texas between 13 Apr and 1 May 1959, given by Army Aircraft Mobile Technical Assistance Team. At the time he was listed in the HQ & HQ Battery, 653d Field Artillery, Utah National Guard. Honorably discharged 24 Jan 1956 as a Specialist 2nd Class (service # 19010983), as part of the HQ Battery, 653d Field Artillery Observation Battalion, Utah National Guard. Note Regarding Fort Sill: The U.S. Army Aviation School was added in 1945, and the following year the U.S. Army Artillery Center was established to test new equipment and doctrine. During the 1950s Fort Sill lost its aviation school to Camp (now Fort) Rucker, Alabama, but remained active, supporting U.S. forces during the Korean War and expanding its artillery mission by acquiring responsibility for army missile and atomic warhead training. As part of that training, soldiers from Fort Sill fired a live 280-millimeter atomic round at Frenchman's Flat, Nevada, in 1953; it was the only time a live atomic artillery shell was ever tested.
