James died of dysentary 17 Sep 1856 while crossing the plains at the Big Sandy, in WY. Of course, I doubt there is any marker of his grave now. After his death, they were still so far from SLC. His wife, Mary Ann was "big" with child and could not pull the handcart. So, James' father, who was 68 yrs old and traveling with them, pulled the handcart into SLC. Therefore, I am sure it was SLC where he died. It is said that William Birch was so exhausted from the effort of getting the handcart, his daughter-in-law and two grandchildren to SLC that he never was the same. He died in 1 Dec 1856 UT. I don't know, but I'll bet he was buried in Pioneer Cemetery too. But that is not included in the records I have.
