Richard Lovell Mendenhall was the son of William Mendenhall and Sarah Lovell. He was born on August 19, 1845 in Nauvoo, Illinois. He married Maria Catherine Boyer on December 5, 1870, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Maria Catherine Boyer was the daughter of Augustus Sell Boyer, who died in Pennsylvannia, and Catherine Houtz Boyer, who joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after her husband's death.
A pioneer to the town of Springville, he served as City Marshall for Springville, Utah, for several years. He moved to Mapleton, Utah in 1878. He also was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Colorado from 1902-1904. He was an Indian War Veteran. He earned his living as a farmer and stockraiser. He also served as the Marshall of Springville, Utah.
