Thomas Knott Holyoak, son of George Holyoak, Jr. and Elizabeth Ann Fergusson, was born June 28, 1875, in the old Holyoak home at Parowan, Utah.
As a small boy, father rode stickhorses. He made his own wagons out of wood, as there were no metal parts available for little wagons. Father would take one of his mother's dinner plates and mark a round circle on the board; then, he would saw the board square as he had no key hole saw. After this, he would saw off the corners and then trim the board with a pocketknife until it was just about as round as the plate he had borrowed. After he had four round boards, he made holes in the center and used them for his wagon wheels. He made the top out of strips of wood. When a wagon like this was completed, it was really appreciated by the maker.
Father wore stilts made of the forked limbs of a tree. Grandfather didn't like this very well as it wore out father's shoes, so he would burn up the stilts, but it wouldn't be long until father had another pair.
Father was a regular boy and when there was work to be done, he would sometimes sneak off to play. He also borrowed a few peaches from some of the neighbors. Father even went swimming on Sunday morning which made him late for Sunday School.
His first school days were spent in an old log schoolhouse with Sadie Meeks as teacher. Turra Smith was the teacher in the concrete schoolhouse where the grade school is now located.
At school the boys and girls got their drinking water from a water bucket located in each room. The teacher complained about the children spilling so much water on the floor, so the next time father got a drink of water, he leaned over the bucket and let the water that dripped from his dipper go back into the bucket. He also went to Primary in this same building.
As a young boy, father helped his Father on the farm doing chores and farm work. Father also worked for Sam Mortensen. For three days he furrowed out corn and pulled cockle burrs. He earned thirty-five cents. Money was so scarce in those days he thought he was rich.
